We made a video of soccer player Victor Wanyama making spaghetti with CF Montréal Chef Dave Dobson. Why?

In 2012, Victor Wanyama tweeted: "I had spaghetti and it was very nice i enjoyed it."

That tweet went viral across the soccer world gaining over 37,000 likes and 40,000 retweets which caused it to be meme’d on the internet for years. Keep in mind that this was during Twitter’s early days, so 37-40k in engagement was considered extremely high.

In 2016, Southampton joined the trend by tweeting: "Fancy a 'nice spaghetti meal' with @VictorWanyama? It's one of many unique #SaintsFC player experiences on offer…"

Then in 2016, Tottenham Hotspurs tweeted about this as well further increasing the memes popularity. Specifically, they had Victor Wanyama who was seen with a overjoyed smile pose with spaghetti in his hands. Their tweet read: "We signed @VictorWanyama and he was very nice we enjoyed it 🍜 😜"

And then, in 2021, a CF Montréal fan encountered Victor Wanyama at an MLS game. This fan was holding a sign that read: “Will trade spaghetti for Kit.”

Wanyama and the fan ended up exchanging a pack of spaghetti for Wanyama’s game worn jersey. CF Montréal filmed the encounter and tweeted: "9 years later and still enjoying it 🍝 / Victor Wanyama adore son spag 🤝 #CFMTL."

This decade long meme was so celebrated within the EPL and MLS community, that we [CF Montréal] decided to show soccer fans what we suspected they've always wanted to see: Victor Wanyama making his spaghetti recipe.

Our strategy was simple, show Wanyama making his spaghetti while incorporating CF Montréal environments and personalities in the video. We decided to film the video at our training facility named Centre Nutrilait, and to have our team chef Dave Dobson be involved in the making of the video. He suggested we give Wanyama his own chef’s uniform which we did. Then, we let Chef Dave and Victor Wanyama do their thing.

What had originally been a very simple tweet about a player’s love for spaghetti, quickly became a viral trend in the soccer world which gained traction through the years. To this day, it elicits fan reactions.

I personally see this as one of the essence of what soccer and media is about: one soccer player, thousands of soccer fans and many soccer teams (Tottenham, Southampton and CF Montréal) coming together — Unity. I truly think that this in my eyes is part of what makes soccer/football so great.

I am so glad with how this came out. It is definitely one of my favourite pieces we've made in the marketing department at CF Montréal in 2023.

PS: It is one of our most viewed videos of the 2023 season! Congrats to our team for making it what it is. I'm so happy with how it turned out.
